Pennell Named National School of Character

Penn-Delco School District  is pleased to announce that on May 13, 2015,  Character.org, a national advocate and leader for the character education movement, named Aston, Coebourn and Pennell Elementary Schools each a 2015 National School of Character. The Schools of Character program recognizes Aston, Coebourn and Pennell as schools that have demonstrated their use of character development to drive a positive impact on academics, student behavior, and school climate.

Aston Elementary is located in Aston, Pa. and has 450 students. Pennell Elementary is also located in Aston, Pa. and has a student population of 300. Coebourn Elementary is located in Brookhaven, Pa. and has a student population of 300. Each school has recently been working with Character.org and previously received State School of Character titles during the last 3 years. Once a State School of Character, schools are eligible for the National distinction and must complete a second round of rigorous evaluations.  

The Schools of Character program is not a competition—but rather an opportunity to go through a rigorous process of feedback and coaching, as well as recognition for growth and excellence in the area of character development through Character.org’s 11 Principles of Effective Character Education framework. Each school will hold its designation for five years. Character.org will showcase Aston, Coebourn and Pennell in an annual publication and on its website. They have also earned the right to use the National Schools of Character name and logo.

Since its inception, Character.org has awarded over 300 schools with the distinction of a National School of Character. In 2015, along with Aston, Coebourn and Pennell, 63 additional schools and 3 districts were named across the United States. Penn-Delco is one of only three districts that had multiple schools receiving the distinction this year. 

“The news that three of our schools have earned not just regional but national recognition for their character-driven practices is both thrilling and justified.  The students in our schools are fortunate to be part of school communities that regularly demonstrate a commitment to values and positive, caring dispositions.  The awards acknowledge the great effort by staff to make character development a priority while maintaining high expectations.”

Character.org will honor Aston, Coebourn and Pennell in person at the 22nd National Forum on Character Education, to be held the weekend of October 15, 2015 in Atlanta, GA.
