Northley Middle School Teacher Receives Best Teacher Under the Sun Award

:  Northley Middle School Math teacher, Mrs. Colleen Miller was selected as a Sun East Federal Credit Union’s “Best Teacher Under the Sun” for the 2015-2016 school year.

Representatives from Sun East Federal Credit Union visited Northley Middle School on May 24 to surprise Mrs. Miller with the award during the school day.  Mrs. Miller was presented with a plaque and $500 from Sun East Federal Credit Union.  Northley also received $500 in honor of the recognition.  Superintendent Dr. George Steinhoff was on hand to acknowledge Mrs. Miller’s dedication to the district as an exceptional and innovative educator.

Mrs. Miller has been a teacher in the Penn-Delco School District for 18 years.  At Northley Middle School Miller has taken the lead on the math curriculum review and revision process. Through her leadership, the department has aligned their curriculum to the PA Core Standards, piloted two different programs, and selected new material. She has also worked with staff on the new student information system, technology integration into lesson planning, and student data analysis. Her knowledge and ability to explain her process has been essential in the growth of many of her colleagues and she continually acts as a mentor to her fellow colleagues.

Additionally, Mrs. Miller recently assumed the advisor position on Northley’s newly developed student Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) committee. The student committee has been critical for the revision and relevance of Northley’s PBIS efforts. The group introduced a new initiative, “Viking Validation” cards, for recognition of positive/appropriate student behaviors in the halls and cafeteria.

In his nomination letter to Sun East, Northley Principal Mr. L.J. Blair stated “Mrs. Miller is an extraordinary educator who is dedicated to providing a rigorous, individualized education to all of her students. In my three and a half years at Northley, Mrs. Miller has been a continual resource for her colleagues and the administration.”
